Safety Town Movie – Project Brief

Isla Vista Session 1 July 7 - 11

Logline

" The (Yet to be Titled) Safety Town Movie " is an immersive journey into the soul of American

childhood today. Through the lens of an 87-year-old nationwide child safety program-run by

passionate volunteers and single-minded civic leaders-we explore how a miniature replica of

American life becomes a battleground to protect children against growing threats. With rare

archival access, including a little-known 1980s Muppets collaboration, the film reveals how

these idealized towns reflect America's hopes, contradictions, and the fragile bonds of civic

trust.

The Film

Tucked into schoolyards and parking lots across the country are miniature cities-perfectly

scaled-down versions of American life, complete with tiny traffic lights, storefronts,

crosswalks, and pedal cars. These are Safety Towns-places where young children learn how

to navigate the real world safely. What began in the late 1930s as a local experiment has

grown into a little-known but vast civic tradition that has shaped the childhoods of millions.
